What this site is
TaxProsOfCA.com explains how California regulates paid tax preparers, and how to check that the person you are about to hire is legally permitted to charge you. California is unusual in regulating preparers at all, and most people do not know the CTEC register exists, let alone that it is public and free to search.
What this site is not
We are not a tax firm. We do not prepare returns, we do not file, we do not review returns and we do not advise on anyone’s tax position. Nobody here is CTEC-registered, a CPA, an enrolled agent or an attorney, and we do not accept enquiries for preparation work or pass your details to anyone who does.
Everything published here is general consumer information drawn from the published rules of CTEC, the IRS and the California Franchise Tax Board. Where an article names one of these sources, you can read the rules yourself on that organization’s own website.
